Sumanth Marda is a Mumbai-based realist artist working primarily in charcoal and oil. His portraits are inspired by people he encounters while travelling across India, particularly those whose lives continue to reflect generations of craftsmanship, custom, and a strong sense of place. Rather than simply recording a likeness, his work seeks to
honour the individuality of each sitter while creating a lasting record of lives and traditions that are steadily changing.
Before turning to fine art, Marda studied Computer Science before earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Character Animation from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. After spending more than a decade in the animation industry, he chose to leave the digital medium behind and return to drawing and painting by hand,
seeking a more direct and meaningful connection with both the creative process and his subjects.
His work has received international recognition, including the Exceptional Merit Award from the Portrait Society of America, the ARC Staff Award and finalist recognition in the Art Renewal Center Salon, selection for the Royal Society of Portrait Painters’ Revealing the Human Drawing Prize exhibition, finalist recognition in the ModPortrait International Portrait Competition, an Honourable Mention in Strokes of Genius 17: The Best of Drawing, and publication in various magazines and Newspapers.
Marda’s first solo exhibition, Art in Reality, was held at Gallery 78 in Hyderabad in 2020. He continues to travel across India in search of compelling faces, natural light, and traditional attire, creating portraits that honour both the individuality of his subjects and the enduring richness of India’s diverse communities.
