Kevin Edwards

After the positive response to Kevin’s first exhibition in 1992, he was able to commit to painting as his main career. Since then he has taken part in many exhibitions and art fairs in Canada and the UK, including 4 solo exhibitions.
Explaining his approach he said ‘it’s about interpreting the landscape by achieving a kind of balance. My aim is to hold a mirror to nature; especially experiences which make me feel that life is great. I interpret the landscape through my own sensibilities, which included a heightened level of colour and using the paint as an equivalent for detail’.
Kevin studied at Art College, full time for six years, specialising in landscape painting and was awarded a scholarship to study from the Catherine and Lady Grace James Foundation. He achieved a Master of Fine Art Degree from Newcastle University 1990. With an initial travel grant from the Arts Council, he went on to make 11 trips to Canada, taking part in 16 exhibitions, the most recent in 2012.
Kevin goes on to explain ‘I use dark rich tones in my shadows, which helps to create a sense of light. There is often a plein air and alla prima painting influence on the technique and some glazing in the finishing stages’.
‘The main subject of my work is carefully observed light, in particular the temperature of the light and its variations from warm to cool in complex and unexpected ways. These variations can have startling effects on texture and distance and the way I see a range of subjects including: landscapes, seascapes, still life and people, all beneath the variegate of daylight.
I specialise in oil paint on canvas and the style is influenced by brush painters like Sargent, Sorolla and Zorn, a kind of loose realism – loose and accurate at the same time’.
Kevin grew up in North Wales; the first inspiration was the beautiful landscape of his homeland. He now lives in the Northumberland and paints full time. He accepts commissions and his works are in private collections, in Canada, America and the United Kingdom.
